The Department of Art at the University of California Santa Barbara invites applications for a full-time tenure track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor in the broadly defined area of Artists’ Print beginning July 1, 2020.
We seek an accomplished artist with expertise in analog and digital print processes in the production of singular and editioned works that may include prints, artists’ publications, online projects and digital/expanded drawing.
The position encourages exploration at the intersections of hand-craft and machine-craft, visual communication, social engagement, new narratives, mixed media, public practice, lens and screen-based work. The position includes oversight and development of a lively digital (2D & 3D) and analog print labs with staff, and offers potential for the development of collaborative projects and publications with artists, writers and researchers across campus and beyond. We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through teaching, service, and their practice/research.
The successful candidate will have a clearly articulated creative practice and a strong interest in and knowledge of contemporary art/art discourse in an increasingly globalized context; will participate in curriculum development and teach a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses ranging from hands-on studio classes to advanced seminars and large lecture classes.
Candidates must have an MFA or an equivalent terminal degree from another country (MA or PhD in Art Practice), as well as extensive exhibition and/or publication in the field; with demonstrated excellence in practice, research, and teaching to complement the department’s strengths in art-making and theory/criticism (see http://www.arts.ucsb.edu). The department has strong historic ties to independent undergraduate research, including through the College of Creative Studies, and to new media research through the Media Arts Technology graduate program. In addition, there is ample scope for inter- and intra-campus collaborations with colleagues in other departments both at UCSB and across the University of California system.
Applicants with a strong commitment to teaching with a minimum of three years as an instructor of record at the college level are preferred.
