Tenure Track Assistant Professor, Painting, Drawing and Social Practice
The Department of Art and Visual Culture (AVC) at Bates College invites applications for a tenure-track position in painting, drawing and social practice to begin Fall of 2020. We seek a visual artist with a strong commitment to their creative work, undergraduate teaching and mentorship, and to active and inclusive pedagogies. Candidates with demonstrated success in working with students from marginalized and underrepresented populations are encouraged to apply.
Our successful candidate will have demonstrable understanding of current issues in the history and criticism of art and visual culture in an interdisciplinary context. Developing courses and making connections across programs and departments is actively encouraged. Such interdisciplinary work could bridge, for example, with Africana, Anthropology and Sociology, Environmental Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Latin American Studies and/or Theater and Dance. A terminal degree is required, and a minimum of two years teaching experience is preferred. The position carries a five-course annual teaching load, of which 3-4 courses per year will be in painting and drawing and 1-2 courses a year in social practice.
As part of a Faculty Diversity and Renewal grant from the Mellon Foundation meant to assist in recruiting and supporting a broadly diverse faculty who will contribute to the college’s academic excellence, diversity of viewpoints and experiences and relevance in a global society, some applicants may be eligible for a combined post-M.F.A. and tenure track appointment in painting, drawing and social practice. In these cases, the post-M.F.A. fellow will have a two course teaching load the first year followed by an automatic conversion to a tenure-track assistant professorship in year two. The latter carries an annual 5 course teaching load. To that end and in furtherance of academic excellence, Bates seeks applications from individuals from underrepresented groups in the professoriate.
In addition to a CV, please submit a portfolio of twenty images of your recent work. If an additional time-based submission is appropriate, it should have a total run time of five minutes maximum.
Please also submit an artist’s statement, a teaching statement in which you describe your teaching experience and several courses you would be interested in proposing for students at a small liberal arts college, and a statement regarding your interest in advancing the goals of diversity and inclusion described above.

Letters of recommendation will be solicited from candidates after initial review. Please include names and contact information of three references.
