The Associate Specialist is primarily responsible for our annual Old Master Drawings auction in New York (bringing in business, developing and managing client relationships, sourcing, coordinating and cataloguing drawings), as well as sourcing and coordinating of Old Master Drawings for European sales, and private sales. This role requires in-depth knowledge of client relationship management and subject matter expertise across the art category, the relevant markets for the category, as well as the process related to producing a sale.
Specific duties & responsibilities will include but are not limited to Working with department heads, supports the sale strategy for Old Master Drawings and works with the management team to successfully execute catalogue curation and sales. Identify and maintain relationships with all client categories (collectors, dealers, corporations, institutions), including the ability to work with major clients in the sale of high value property. Use networking experience and convening power to maximize success of the sales and foster potential business. Foster ties with other relevant specialists and sale sites.
Function as liaison with the Estates, Appraisals & Valuations department, working on appraisals as a means of generating new long-term business opportunities and reconnecting with inactive clients. Function as the liaison with the Proposals department on Old Master Drawings, and as a liaison, working with business management and specialists within the cluster, to develop strategies and proposals to win competitive business. Work with Client Strategy and Business Intelligence teams to ensure client information databases are up to date, including catalogue lists, and that client metrics are monitored and inform the Business Group business development activities. Review all incoming photo enquiries for Drawings to determine sale potential. Participate in departmental hilling sessions, incorporating Drawings and take on research assignments for the cluster as needed. Write and prepare catalogue essays for Drawings and assist within the cluster as agreed. Work on catalogue production and layout for OMD and the cluster as required, with colleagues and business management. Ensure all property entered for sale meets standards for provenance and condition reports as appropriate. Provide Old Master Drawings matter expertise on pricing, valuations, cataloguing, researching for staff at all levels across the Business Group. Lead appraisals and follow through on consignments in all stages of the sale, updating senior specialists and business management as needed. Manage own clients and continue to develop and nurture a network of clients and contacts to convert for sales. Work closely with Business Group management team, marketing, client strategy and business intelligence to maximise channels (e-commerce, auction, private sales) and client opportunities. Continually builds an understanding of the current market and keep an eye on the key players (buying and selling) Ensure that all new business opportunities are acted on and followed through. Manage pre-sale exhibition set-up. Work with buyers during sale week to market and pre-sell the sale. Participate in pre-selling upcoming auctions through targeted marketing efforts. Participate in Telephone Bidding with clients during the auction. View and visit competitors’ auctions and track overall results. Actively participate in domestic events, art fairs, and other functions to represent Christie’s. Liaise with Business Management on the annual budget and forecasting of sales budgets, cost control and maintaining profitability Work with Marketing department on marketing initiatives, including, but not limited to, advertising, web page, Christie’s publications Act as a representative of Christie’s and build alliance and networks of key influencers in the market. Other duties as assigned by Manager. Duties may change or expand over time to suit the needs of the business.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in applicable Art History or Decorative Arts category; M.A preferred. Minimum of 5 years’ work experience and an expertise in the category. Knowledge of the auction business. Knowledge of a foreign language Demonstrated ability in appraising property and business-getting. Knowledge of E-mail, Spreadsheet, Word Processing and Presentation software (Microsoft Office preferred). Ability to learn Christie’s systems including COS, JDE, James, intranet and website. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including superior written and spoken communication. Exceptional client service skills. Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize. Strong follow-up skills with attention to detail. Ability to work within a team environment
