About the Department:
The Art Department at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) has 14 full-time faculty, six part-time faculty, and approximately 300 majors pursuing BA degrees in Studio Art, Art Education, and Art History, as well as BFA degrees in Art with concentrations in Graphic Design, Painting and Drawing, Photography and Media Art, and Sculpture. The department’s faculty and staff enjoy a reputation as dedicated, hard-working, engaged, and collegial with an active record of research and dissemination. UTC is an accredited member institution of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
The Art Department is housed in the newly renovated Fine Arts Center (2020) and in the recently renovated Bretske Hall (2014). These facilities house Mac computer labs, junior and senior studio spaces, a darkroom, a lighting studio, a wood and metals shop, seminar and lecture rooms for art history, and studio classrooms for graphic design, painting and drawing, sculpture, photography and media arts, and foundations.
The Fine Arts Center also houses the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) at UTC, the first ICA in the state of Tennessee that will be inaugurated in Spring 2021. The ICA at UTC operates in conjunction with and in support of the Department of Art. The ICA is led by a full-time curator and director who coordinates an ambitious contemporary program of exhibitions and events. The department also programs The Apothecary, an experimental student-run gallery located within walking distance of the department’s primary facilities.
With the support of a full-time administrative assistant and an associate head, the department head manages and leads the Department of Art, teaches in an area of expertise within the department, engages in and promotes scholarship and service, and maintains internal and external constituent relationships.
The Department Head is a permanent 12-month appointment—appointed by the Dean with the support of departmental faculty and staff. The head manages and leads the Department of Art, teaches a 1-1 load in an area of expertise within the department, engages in and promotes scholarship, engages in and promotes service, and maintains internal and external constituent relationships. The head reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and serves at the discretion of the Dean. Working with departmental faculty and staff, the Head will work toward broadening participation among members of underrepresented groups, supporting the integration of inclusive perspectives into the culture and curriculum of the department.
Terminal degree in an arts-related field, demonstrated experience working in the one of the department’s primary program areas (Graphic Design, Painting and Drawing, Photography and Media Arts, Sculpture, Art History, Art Education), and a minimum of 10 years of professional work experience in higher education instruction. The position will be appointed as a tenured full professor in the department and the candidate must meet the minimum qualifications for rank and tenure as established in the UT Chattanooga Faculty Handbook.
Administrative leadership experience as department head or director, program coordinator, or equivalent experience. Experience with NASAD accreditation and art education licensure. Summary of Job Duties:
Provide effective leadership in facilitating the vision, mission, goals, and objectives of the Department consistent with those of the College and University.
Teach courses in area of expertise (1-1 load).
Annual faculty/staff evaluations within the department, providing appropriate and timely feedback.
Oversee program assessment and reporting.
Develop and submit annual goals and reports to Dean.
Work with the University’s Development Office to advocate for program support.
Collaborate with faculty in steering curriculum development.
Develop and manage departmental budget and financial resources.
Delegate/allocate service responsibilities in an effective and equitable manner to meet the needs of faculty, students, the department, and the college.
Facilitate recruitment and retention of a diverse group of highly qualified and motivated faculty and staff.
Provide mentoring and support for professional development.
Facilitate departmental meetings.
Facilitate recruitment and retention of a diverse student population.
Maintain professional and ethical standards in administration of duties.
Engage in professional and scholarly research.
