POSITION OPENING: Director of Development
Organization Overview and Culture
3Arts is a nonprofit organization that advocates for women artists, artists of color, and d/Deaf and disabled artists working in the performing, teaching, and visual arts in the six-county Chicago area. Our investment in artists’ enterprises, agency, and wellbeing reflects an equal commitment to bolstering the creative spirit and health of every neighborhood in our city where they work and live. Our focus on justice and artists is designed to upend common systems of power by putting resources directly into the hands of the artists who propel needed and formidable ripple effects across our city.
Through unrestricted cash awards, project funding, residency fellowships, and professional development, 3Arts helps artists build momentum in their careers over time. Since 2007, 3Arts has supported 1,000 artists across all program areas, representing 70% women-identified artists, 70% artists of color, and 10% d/Deaf and disabled artists, and distributed $3.8 million through our grantmaking. In the past three years (2017-2019), 3Arts has supported artists living in 68 zip codes: 43 within the city limits, 18 in other Cook County neighborhoods, and seven in surrounding counties.
3Arts is a 108-year-old organization that was founded as The Three Arts Club of Chicago to support young women studying the arts—eight years before women had the right to vote. For 13 years, we have operated as an arts service and grantmaking organization with an equity-based mission rooted in our history of arts and social justice. Our organization’s culture embodies creativity, responsiveness, collaboration, fluidity, integrity, and depth of purpose. Every member of our small staff is a representative of our mission, both behind and beyond our office doors. We strive to instill a balance between rigorous production and purpose-driven values, in which both organizational and sector-wide vision and advocacy are investigated and experienced. In each other, we value flexibility, good humor, openness, a collaborative spirit, curiosity, and positive energy.
3Arts is always evolving and does not sit still; we are looking for someone to join our three-person team who shares our drive and can push forward along with us. A new position, the Director of Development (DoD) represents that forward motion as our organization seeks to grow to four staff members.
This is not your typical development job. We don’t have support staff at 3Arts. What we do have is a collective spirit in which we support each other across one-person departments.
The DoD, a full-time and exempt position, reports to and works hand-in-hand with the Executive Director on revenue-building efforts. As is true for the whole 3Arts team, the DoD collaborates with all members of the staff on many aspects of activities that the DoD oversees—including foundation, corporation, and government grants; public relations and communications; donor relations, tracking, and record-keeping; Board of Directors support; event planning and oversight; and administration. We seek an entrepreneurial, detail- and vision-oriented, data-comfortable communicator with terrific writing skills.
This is the perfect position for someone with about five+ years of experience who is as passionate as we are about our mission, gravitates to change-making work, thrives in a creative and forward-thinking environment, likes to take on responsibility and work independently with loads of initiative, stays comfortably on top of deadlines, and pays exceptional attention to both high-level systems and the nuances of human-centered implementation. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of and connection to the local arts, culture, and philanthropic sectors.
The DoD is integral to the success of our organization and the future of our work. This is a full-time position that offers a salary range of $90,000-$95,000, depending upon experience.
The DoD implements all aspects of fundraising, working closely with the Executive Director at a high level. Responsibilities include:
Community Award: the DoD will manage all aspects of our annual Community Award crowdfunding campaign, including:
Co-create and implement the annual 3Arts Awards celebration, with oversight of:
Experience with the following is preferred: Quickbooks, eTapestry or similar donor database, Microsoft Office Suite, Constant Contact, and Photoshop.
The compensation package includes 95% of health, dental, vision coverage; life insurance; two weeks of paid vacation plus paid time off from December 24 through January 1; 14 paid holidays and three personal days; an optional 403(b) retirement plan; and opportunities for professional development.
Note that 3Arts staff is working from home through at least 2020, so this is a remote position until further notice.
3Arts is committed to supporting a diverse and creative workplace that reflects our mission and values.
The position will remain open until filled, but we do aim to fill it swiftly. To ensure timely consideration, please send your cover letter, résumé, and at least one relevant writing sample to: email@example.com. We are unable to respond to applicants personally and have enlisted our former Board Chair, Marcia Festen, to manage our search.
