Executive Director and Chief Curator | The Kitchen (New York, NY)
October 09, 2020
The Kitchen, one of the oldest non-profit alternative arts spaces in New York City, seeks a visionary and collaborative Executive Director and Chief Curator (“Director”) to lead the organization as it celebrates its 50th anniversary and embarks on its next era of artistic experimentation. This is a unique opportunity for an ambitious and forward-looking curatorial and institution-building leader to continue to develop this preeminent institution and meaningfully influence the trajectory of American art.
For nearly five decades, The Kitchen has been a powerful force in the United States’ contemporary arts ecosystem, nurturing emergent and established artists alike in the creation of groundbreaking works that expand and traverse conventional disciplinary boundaries across the full spectrum of visual and performing arts. As evidenced by its illustrious history, The Kitchen is unique in its ability to create space for cross-disciplinary experimentation, allowing it to help launch the careers of artists who have gone on to define the American avant-garde. In doing so, it has fostered a living dialogue among artists from every field and area of culture as they create an art for our time.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the next Director will continue this legacy, articulating a curatorial vision that charts the course forward and developing the institutional infrastructure necessary for the organization to more deeply and effectively embody its mission. The successful candidate will be a curatorial leader with a demonstrated track record of identifying emergent trends in the contemporary arts landscape and will have the savvy to translate this foresight into an artistic vision and innovative programs. At the same time, this person will embrace the opportunity to step into the chief executive role, guiding the organization in developing institutional frameworks, systems, and processes that empower and support the staff; advancing an ethos of clear and transparent communications across all stakeholders; championing the values of equity, diversity, and justice; and working with the Board and staff to see the ongoing capital campaign and building renovation through to completion.
As the artistic and administrative leader for The Kitchen, the Director will work closely with the Board and staff to oversee all curatorial decisions, artistic and educational programs, the annual budget, fundraising and development efforts, marketing and communications, and strategic goal-setting. As the organization’s lead spokesperson, the Director will continue to build The Kitchen’s visibility and reputation as a preeminent arts organization within New York City and beyond.
