Brooklyn Metal Works is now accepting submissions for our 2016 juried jewelry and object exhibition.
We are looking for your talismans, amulets, shrines, charms and the like, that have been created to wear, carry, or look upon. These objects may convey a specific power, intend to protect against superstition, or commemorate. This is an all-media call.
This call is inspired by a quote from the only surviving poem by Lucretius (c. 99 – c. 55 BCE) – On the Nature of Things.
“There are no angels, demons, or ghosts. Immaterial spirits of any kind do not exist….Forget them.”
Yet it seems that despite our best efforts, we can’t. Our interest in this call lies in humankind’s perennial struggle between personal autonomy and spiritual guidance, and how these ideas manifest and inspire the fabrication of physical objects.
All cultures throughout the ages have taken abstract concepts like gods, demons, imps, and spirits and translated them into material items that are often housed in esteemed spaces. Shrines that celebrate, amulets that protect, and totems that commemorate these enduring theologies and phenomenons. Perhaps the most resilient form of piety, the belief that objects imbued with spiritual reverence might protect or reward the owner withstands the test of time, often despite our better judgment.

Entry fee: $25-
Work must have been completed between 2012 and 2016.
You may enter up to 3 separate works, with 1 work per image. Additionally you may submit 1 detail image of each work. The maximum allowance of images is 6 – comprised of 1 main and 1 detail for each entry.
Images should be 300dpi no larger than 8.5” x 11” with a maximum file size of 2MB.
Label each image with your last name and title of work as follows:
Please include a slide list with image titles, materials, dimensions, and year completed. If the work is for sale please include the retail price, and all entries should include insurance value.
A short artist statement, no more than 200 words, is required.

Your application will not be finalized until the entry fee has been paid.
We reserve the right to omit from the exhibition accepted artwork that differs dramatically from what is represented by the digital image submitted.

Shipping and displays:
Special displays are the responsibility of the artist and will be considered on a case by case basis.
Artists are responsible for shipping and insurance while in transit to Brooklyn Metal Works.
Artists whose work is not for sale must pay for shipping and insurance in both directions.
Brooklyn Metal Works will pay for return shipping and insurance up to $20 through the USPS.
There will be three cash prizes awarded. The prize amounts are based on a percentage of the collected entry fees.
The grand prize winner will receive 25% of the total, or a maximum of $1000.
The runner up will receive 15% of the total, or a maximum of $600.
Honorable mention will receive 10% of the total, or a maximum of $400.
Awards will be announced during the opening reception in the gallery at Brooklyn Metal Works, and winning artists will be notified by phone or email.
A small catalog will be produced to document this exhibition. At least one image of juried works by selected artists will be included. Accompanying artists’ statements may also be used. BKMW may also utilized images of selected works to promote the exhibition online through social media, on our website, and through printed material such as postcards and flyers.
