Senior Program Specialist (Youth Arts)
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under supervision, provides leadership and direction in assigned program areas. Manages special projects, programs and new initiatives perform related duties as required.
Program Description: Chicago Park District’s Arts and Culture Unit envisions parks as vital cultural spaces that encourage all Chicagoans to explore and embrace the arts and their power to enhance individual quality of life, neighborhood development and community dialogue.
The Senior Program Specialist for Youth Arts Programs leads the growth and development of citywide programming for children, families and teens in the Chicago Park District’s Arts and Culture Unit. This includes resource, partnership, and curriculum development; program staff supervision; and primary oversight of daily operations of youth arts programs including the following:
Arts XIII – a multidisciplinary Arts program for 12-14 year olds that operates in three Park District locations. Its goal is to foster the exploration of identity and community through engagement with the arts, as well as exposure to professional artists, experiences and materials. Arts XIII currently consists of a six week specialty camp and a year-round workshop series for young teenagers.
Kidsmobile – a mobile program that engages children and families in unstaffedplaylotsthrough creative arts, nature, literacy and imaginative play. Kidsmobile visits 18 park locations, twice weekly throughout the summer and engages youth and families in creative arts and play through year round special events.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Coordinates special programs and projects with department staff. Establishes external partnerships. Represents the Park District with outside agencies, locally and nationwide. Presents department goals and vision to outside agencies. Plays a leadership role in developing and disseminating program information city wide. Consults on program training needs. Assesses local park programs. Develops program standards and guidelines. Provides technical assistance to local parks as assigned. Develops an coordinates new program initiatives. Oversees data collection where appropriate. Oversees budget and staffing. Supervises staff. Performs related duties as assigned or required.
