Service Bureau Production Specialist | School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL
Responsible for full range of Service Bureau production services at the School of the Art Institute, which include client consultation, and the completion and distribution of output requests such as: large- and small-format printing; book binding; vinyl cutting; folding; cutting; and CD/DVD duplication and printing. Perform Service Bureau printer and computer maintenance, production-related job tracking, budgetary record-keeping, and tracking of supply inventory. Prepare and conduct technical training workshops and demonstrations for faculty and classes. Advise faculty, staff, alumni, and students on an individual and group basis regarding color correction and management, image enhancement, file preparation, paper selection, exhibition practices, and so on.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Complete large- and small-format printing and finishing jobs in a timely and professional manner. Perform pre-flight checks of customer files, consult with clients to correct missing components, maintain quality control of finished product.
Provide pre-production support, including cost and production timeframe estimates, and other assistance to help with planning and budgeting. Manage student group funds and facilitate departmental budget transactions.
Train and oversee student workers to ensure proper workflow procedures.
Consult with faculty, students, alumni and staff on an individual basis regarding digital printing, graphic applications, file preparation, color management, output resolution, care and handling of archival digital prints, etc.
Produce educational documentation regarding file preparation and digital output best practices for students, faculty and staff. Coordinate and present demonstrations and training workshops for faculty and classes.
Assist Service Bureau Manager in creating custom ICC color profiles, and provide testing and troubleshooting of color management practices for eventual School-wide implementation.
Color calibrate Service Bureau and select general access printers and monitors on a regular basis. Assist students, staff and faculty with calibrating personal laptops.
Aid in the production of Service Bureau promotional materials, including newspaper ads, brochures, posters, websites, digital ads, blog posts, etc. Promote the Service Bureau at various School functions such as Orientation Week and other events.
Maintain extensive and up-to-date working knowledge of industry-standard and School-specific graphic software applications. Stay abreast of evolving color management systems and digital output trends/issues. Utilize online/on-campus training resources related to digital output and color management technologies.
Meet regularly with fellow CRIT staff to discuss departmental projects, encourage general communication and teamwork, and promote the sharing of information and resources. Participate in School-wide technology-related committees and training.
Maintain professional appearance of the Service Bureau, and perform duties in a professional manner. Keep regular inventory of service parts and supplies.
Provide maintenance and repair of SAIC copy machines and printers as needed. Assist the Assistant Director of Digital Output Technologies with School-wide distribution of copy paper and other supplies as needed.
Research hardware and software needs and advise the Service Bureau Manager on technical issues and purchases.
Perform other duties as assigned, and assist the Service Bureau Manager with administrative tasks.
