Postponed to 2023: New dates to be announced soon

Puertográfico

Islands are vessels anchored at sea. Moored between the cultures of two continents, Borikén —the original name of Puerto Rico— has been a center of cultural exchange for centuries, with a rich and complex heritage. From the early engravings on stone, to the intense printmaking production of the 20th Century and the present, Puerto Rican graphic artists have sought cultural interaction with the world by sea and air. PUERTOGRÁFICO will showcase, through artistry, technique and dialogue, one of the strongest callings for our work: the tracing of History.

Welcome aboard.

Bienvenidos a bordo.

Mission Statement / Nuestro Propósito

Puertográfico 2023 is an exciting opportunity for the SGC International members to connect with Puerto Rican artists, explore our shared passion for printmaking, learn from each other, and celebrate Puerto Rico’s incredible printmaking tradition. As one vibrant, diverse community we will share in a four day SGCI extravaganza with unexpected twists to familiar programming and engaging new events creating a memorable experience for all. We will explore Puerto Rican culture & history, learn through Puerto Rico’s graphic tradition of its inspiring fight for democracy, offer opportunities to volunteer in communities or offer assistance with hurricane relief, and so much more. SGC International’s vision for this meeting of cultures is to educate our membership on the complexity of the Puerto Rico/US relationship, create a platform for mutual understanding, foster future artistic collaborations, and build lasting friendships. This is no tropical vacation; Puertográfico 2023 will be an adventure for all!

Call for Participation

Convocatoria de Participación

The Puertográfico Call for Participation is now closed. In 2022, SGCI will announce a new call for any openings we may have in the 2023 schedule.

Puertográfico 2023 will introduce our organization to a different culture and there will be exciting shifts in the format of our conference as well! This year, the only panels will be a limited number of plenary panels to be presented to all our members at morning conference-wide gatherings. We’ll have more Inkubators to encourage dialogue on the discourse of printmaking, inter-cultural exchange, and the evolution of SGC International. All exhibition opportunities will be pop-ups—accepted exhibitions will be only of unframed work, organizers must bring all work with them as they travel to San Juan, and exhibitions will be for one day only with installation occurring in the early morning and deinstallation in the evening. There will be group critiques for students, exhibitions and panels organized from the Open Portfolio, and opportunities to volunteer where it’s needed in Puerto Rican communities. We’re eager to hear your innovative proposals for low-tech demos, mobile events, and special programming. Did someone say beach events? Bring ‘em on! Puertográfico 2023 will be the SGCI conference not to be missed!

Plenary Panels: Presented to all our members at morning conference-wide gatherings, plenary panels are discussions between four or five panelists and a moderator.

Inkubators: Inkubators are informal group discussions, distinct from panels in that they are round table discussions, with minimal moderation by the organizer.

Demos: A demo is a demonstration of a printmaking technique, material, tool or process by an SGCI Member, utilizing the presses, equipment, spaces, and/or materials available at the local conference venues.

Pop-Up Exhibitions:  One-day exhibitions! Please note that the work will need to be unframed, and the exhibition proposer will be responsible for bringing the artwork to be exhibited to Puerto Rico, and the exhibition will be limited to one day (including install and deinstall).

Themed Portfolios: Proposed and curated by SGCI Members, and based on the conference’s theme. Participants receive a portfolio with a full set of prints.

Mobile Events: Demo kits, projects, discussions, performances, or talks intended to take place on conference buses while in transit between venues.

Special Events: We welcome your ideas for innovative proposals such as beach activities, low-tech demos, kite exhibitions… anything you can dream up!

Postponement Announcement

March 9th, 2020

Dear SGC International Community,

It is with great disappointment that I am writing to inform you that the SGCI Executive Board and the Puertográfico Steering Committee have come to the decision that we must postone Puertográfico 2020 from its original schedule of  April 1 – 4, 2020 to a later date. This is a heartbreaking outcome for those of us who have worked so hard to create an SGCI conference truly like no other while introducing our membership to the remarkable printmaking tradition, culture, environment, and people of Puerto Rico.

We have been working non-stop weighing all of the concerns and challenges of our conference and the coronavirus. As a board it is our responsibility to look out for the best interest of the organization with special regard to the financial health of SGCI. This has been a primary concern as we are contractually obligated to the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino and have incurred expenses for this conference. We have also been receiving many cancelation notices from our members, vendors, and panelists that have affected all levels of programming. Ultimately, we are concerned about the health and safety of our conference attendees, Puerto Rican citizens, and everyone’s families. The only right thing to do at this time is to reschedule.

At this time we are beginning discussions about how we move forward with all things related to Puertográfico. We are developing plans for the handling of registration fees and conference events that cannot be rescheduled. We will be working with our hosts and the Sheraton to reschedule Puertográfico. Above all, we are striving to do everything we can to express our admiration of, gratitude for, and friendship with the Puerto Rican printmaking community. We will continue to work to ensure that they feel they are a valued and supported part of our community.

SGCI would like to express our continued gratitude to all who have been instrumental in the development, planning, and organizing of Puertográfico 2020, especially our Puerto Rican compatriots. We also appreciate the input that we have received from so many of our members and attendees over the past few weeks.

We will reach out to you as soon as we have more information for you. If you have questions or concerns, please send them to support@sgcinternational.org. We will respond as promptly as possible.

In the meantime, please be certain to cancel your room reservations at the Sheraton. You have up until three days before your scheduled arrival to cancel your reservations. If you do not, the Sheraton will charge you the full rate for your stay.

Thank you for your patience as we have worked to come to a consensus on this matter.

Respectfully,

Charles Beneke
SGC International, President

Dear Puertográfico Event Organizer,

Thank you for your patience as we work to move forward with Puertográfico. Our first priority has been to enact a plan for the handling of registration fees. Our Puertográfico Registration Fee Handling Plan is still in full swing and members will be able to make their decisions how they wish their fees to be handled until June 1, 2020 at 11:59 PM CST. Make certain to log your choice before then.

We have been working with our hosts and the Sheraton to reschedule Puertográfico. At this time, we plan to reschedule the conference for spring of 2023. This time slot is best for our steering committee, and is the first available time slot that is not committed to another host site. Because your proposals were specific to Puertográfico and its theme, Islands are vessels anchored at sea / Las islas son embarcaciones ancladas al mar, we hope to include your proposals in the 2023 conference rather than fitting them into an upcoming conference. We were thrilled by your presentations, and are grateful to you for the time and energy you put into developing them. Once we have finalized a new contract, we will be in touch to inquire if you are still interested in holding your event.

In the meantime, we welcome you to apply to the 2021 Conference in Providence, RI. Their theme is Verified by Proof, and the Call for Participation can be found here.

For Themed Portfolios: we understand that many of you had already shipped your work before the cancellation. The portfolios have been collected from the PO Box and are safely stored with our Steering Committee. We will be in touch soon with additional information.

For more information on recent activity at SGCI, please see the Outgoing President’s Letter to the Membership and 2018 – 20 Executive Board Spring Report, posted on May 1.

The past two months have been challenging for us all for so many reasons. Your support and understanding has been a source of great encouragement to all who to all who have been working on the planning of Puertográfico and the resolution of its postponement.

Thank you,
The SGCI Executive Board and the Puertográfico Steering Committee
