Workshop Leader: Alicia Candiani

Alicia Candiani is an Argentine artist and cultural leader whose work in expanded printmaking, digital media, and collaborative practices has been internationally exhibited and awarded. She is the founder and director of Proyecto´ace, an influential 20 years old artist-in-residence program in Buenos Aires focused on contemporary print media, expanded printmaking practices and visual culture. A longtime member of SGC International, Candiani has served on its Board of Directors and chaired the International Panel on many occasions. In 2016, she received the Member of the Council Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to both the council and the field.

Throughout the two-week program, Alicia Candiani will lead the group in collaboration with her well-trained team at Proyecto’ace, including Sebastián Podbersich, master printer, and André Knobs, program producer and coordinator. Together, they will guide participants through both the conceptual and technical aspects of printmaking, fostering a unique space of artistic dialogue and production.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Graphic Drift is a hybrid program that combines a microresidency format with a cultural tour focused on the dynamic graphic arts scene of Buenos Aires City. Over 15 days, selected artists will engage in studio-based production at Proyecto´ace while exploring the city’s living ecosystem of printmaking: from independent workshops and artist-run spaces to galleries, museums, and collective projects.

Set in the dynamic cultural ecosystem of Buenos Aires and rooted in Proyecto´ace’s long-standing commitment to collaborative work, this experience offers perspectives that challenge conventional models of production and mobility while exploring the role of printmaking as a relational, porous, and resilient practice. It is an invitation to redraw maps, both artistic and personal, through shared processes and new forms of connection.

Created in collaboration with the Southern Graphics Council International (SGCI), and in celebration of Proyecto´ace’s 20th anniversary, this program is both a space for personal artistic development and a collective journey through the diverse and layered graphic landscape of the city. The residency culminates with a group exhibition of the works produced and a parallel showcase of the portfolio [Im]Possible Parallels, linking the individual and the continental, the intimate and the cartographic.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
This 15-day microresidency invites artists to immerse themselves in Buenos Aires through two intertwined approaches: focused printmaking work at Proyecto´ace’s studio and curated explorations of the city’s vibrant artistic ecosystem. Inspired by the idea of the “drift” —whether technical, visual, or urban— the program proposes a creative and affective mapping of the city and of one’s own practice.

Participants will have exclusive access to workshops, guided visits to artist studios, print collectives, independent spaces, and galleries, allowing for deep engagement with the local art scene while advancing their own projects in a supportive and technically equipped environment.

Two Exhibitions

  • [Im]Possible Parallels Portfolio Show: A curated exhibition of the print portfolio by SGCI and Proyecto´ace, hosted in Buenos Aires.
  • Residency Outcomes Show: An open studio or exhibition of the works produced during the microresidency, reflecting each artist’s own drift—conceptual, technical, or geographic.

Program Structure (Sample Schedule)

Week 1: Studio Foundation + Urban Exploration

  • Morning: Introduction to Proyecto´ace’s workshop & technical support
  • Afternoons: Curated visits to local printmaking collectives, artist-run spaces, exhibitions, and cultural landmarks

Week 2: Production + Reflection+ Exhibition

  • Morning: Independent or mentored work sessions in the studio
  • Afternoons: Talks with local artists and curators, artist-led neighborhood walks
  • Final days: Assembly of the exhibition and collective reflection

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The residency invites work on a double axis:

Graphic drift: a technical, conceptual, and material exploration of the multiple image as an expanded form of printmaking.
Urban drift: curated routes through Buenos Aires’ artistic ecosystem as both a cartographic and affective practice.

By walking, observing, and producing, artists create their own maps: not of streets, but of connections, dislocations, and meanings. As Borges once imagined a map so perfect it matched the size of the territory, this residency invites artists to trace their own expansive and imperfect cartographies —poetic records of how we walk through places and how places walk through us.
