The SGC International annual conference brings together over 1,000 printmakers and arts professionals in all stages of their careers. We look forward to bringing our membership back to the Midwest!
Registration is open! $359 for Professionals and $249 for Students. Some add-ons–such as the banquet, open portfolio, mentorship sessions, lunches, and the print exchange–will close on February 28, 2022 but you will still be able to register for the conference. Registration for Vendors closes on February 28.
Vendors who register after January 31st may not be included in the conference catalogue but will be in the Vendor Directory on the website.

Cancellation Policy: All cancellations must be made in writing to help@sgcinternational.org by February 18, 2022, in order to receive a partial refund. A $75 cancellation process and handling fee will be assessed to any cancellation made by the deadline. Cancellations after February 18, 2022, will not receive a refund. SGCI may require up to 10 business days to process and issue a refund.

This is a non-paid volunteer opportunity; however, volunteers will receive a discount code for $45 off of Our Shared Future conference registration. Volunteers must be in attendance to serve.
Time Commitment: Three consecutive hours total. There are limited opportunities for a full registration waiver with a greater time commitment (see below).

Our Shared Future
Our Shared Future printmaking conference is a call to artists to consider how our studio practice makes culture and knowledge visible through socially engaged graphic arts of the past, present, and future.
Printmaking can deepen our understanding of the world, inherently challenge systems of oppression, and can push against histories of colonization, unwarranted violence, and systemic racism.
Artists share in the responsibility to shape our future. The 2022 SGCI printmaking conference is implicitly guided by the social and environmental ecology of a place and seeks to affirm the role of graphic arts within Our Shared Future.

The Art Department and the School of Education are honored to bridge the international and national SGCI community with the dynamic printmaking legacy of UW-Madison. The UW-Madison printmaking area faculty wish to acknowledge that we are living and working within the ancestral lands of the Ho-Chunk Nation. Our future is understood through our past.
The Art Department faculty and students are diverse. Diversity is a source of strength, creativity, and innovation for UW-Madison. We value the contributions of each person and respect the profound ways their identity, culture, background, experience, status, abilities, and opinion enrich the university community.
What’s Happening
March 16–19, 2022
UW-Madison welcomes the national and international printmaking community to engage with historical print collections, shared research, studio demonstrations, and contemporary exhibitions curated by our partners at the Chazen Museum of Art, Tandem Press, Kohler Art Library, Ebling Library, and Memorial Library Special Collections.
We invite you to participate in panels, portfolios, performances, exhibitions, INKubators, demos, mentor sessions, and live print events across campus hosted by the Art Department and the School of Education. The 2022 conference expands on the definition of “print,” to include an interdisciplinary approach and expansion of print media.
SGCI celebrations, awards, and events will extend to our colleagues at the School of Human Ecology and our community partners Edgewood College Gallery, Overture Center for the Arts, James Watrous Gallery, Wisconsin Veterans Museum, Arts + Literature Laboratory, Abel Contemporary Gallery and Madison Arts Commission.
We will showcase participation from national and international artists, scholars, and notable alumni. SGCI and UW-Madison printmaking outreach includes local arts organizations, youth organizations, regional artists, and community members and other civic community centers of art and culture.
Where We Are
Teejop (day-JOPE)
Before it was called Madison, Teejop (day-JOPE) was once home to a flourishing community that created thousands of mounds in the shape of animal, bird, spirit, and human forms. The University of Wisconsin–Madison occupies ancestral Ho-Chunk land, a place their nation has called Teejop since time immemorial. In an 1832 treaty, the Ho-Chunk were forced to cede this territory. Decades of ethnic cleansing followed when both the federal and state government repeatedly, but unsuccessfully, sought to forcibly remove the Ho-Chunk from their homeland.
After 171 years, leaders of the Ho-Chunk Nation, UW-Madison alumni, and campus leadership are working to develop a communal educational relationship symbolized by a heritage marker titled “Our Shared Future” to recognize campus as the ancestral home of the Ho-Chunk.
Our Shared Future conference theme joins UW–Madison’s commitment to respect the inherent sovereignty of the Ho-Chunk Nation and the other First Nations of Wisconsin. Our Shared Future is a process, not a land acknowledgement or something to recite. It is a first step in a multi-year effort to educate the campus and the broader community on the Ho-Chunk Nation and the history it shares with the university.

2022 Awardees
Lifetime Achievement in Printmaking Award
Mel Chin is a conceptual visual artist. Motivated largely by political, cultural, and social circumstances, Chin works in a variety of art media to calculate meaning in modern life. Chin places art in landscapes, in public spaces, and in gallery and museum exhibitions, but his work is not limited to specific venues. Photo credit: photo: Miriam Heads
Lifetime Achievement in Printmaking Award
Enrique Chagoya is a Mexican-born American painter, printmaker, and educator. The subject of his artwork is the changing nature of culture. Chagoya teaches at Stanford University, in the department of Art and Art History. He lives in the San Francisco.
2022 SGCI Mid-Career Printmaker Awardee
Miguel A. Aragón lives and works in New York City (USA) and Berlin (Germany); he is an Associate Professor in Printmaking at CUNY College of Staten Island. Aragón has exhibited internationally and has been published in A Survey of Contemporary Printmaking (Greenville, NC: Wellington B. Gray Gallery, 2012), Peenemünde Project: Geschichte wird Kunst / Imprinting History (Berlin: Edition Braus, 2017) and ¡Printing the Revolution! The Rise and Impact of Chicano Graphics, 1965 to Now (Washington, DC: Smithsonian American Art Museum. His awards and residences include NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship; KALA Art Institute Fellowship, Berkeley, CA; Zygote Press, Cleveland, OH. Aragón’s work is held in collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago; The Janet Turner Print Museum; Chico, CA; and Minneapolis Institute of Art.
His works explore subjects of violence, mortality, transient and/or persistent memory, perception and the multiple; he uses erasure as language through processes that are reductive in nature.
2022 SGCI Emerging Printmaker Awardee
Taro Takizawa is an artist who focuses on printmaking, wall vinyl installations, drawings and 2D designs. Born in Japan, he has been making images connecting what he has experienced in Japan where he grew up and, in the U.S. since he moved in 2002. His works contains both western and eastern aesthetics with appreciation of traditional printmaking processes and mark making. He is fascinated with blending the boundaries of contemporary studio practice and traditional processes, printmaking and installations, influenced by traditional Japanese patterns from textile designs, architecture and crafts. He currently resides in Denmark.

2022 SGCI Graduate Student Fellowship Awardee
Maya Stern is a New-York based printmaking and fiber artist whose work considers the slippage and distortion of ancestral memories. Stern received her MFA from Syracuse University and her BFA from the University of Rhode Island. Her work has been exhibited nationally with most recent shows at Governors Island (New York, NY) sUgAR Gallery (Fayetteville, AR), Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (Brooklyn, NY), and the Community Folk Arts Center (Syracuse, NY). She is the recent recipient of the Printmaking Today State of the Art Prize, the Merion Behr Printmaking Award, the Trust at Governors Island Artist Residency, and the Graduate Fellowship from the Southern Graphics Council International.

2022 Gamblin Awardees:
Adriana Barrios – Emerging Artist Category
Adriana Barrios is a queer, biracial, Latina artist who grew up on the coastal borderlands of San Diego, California. Barrios received her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and is a Master of Fine Arts graduate from The University of Wisconsin-Madison. Barrios has worked with The Haystack Mountain School of Craft, Santa Reparata International School of Art, and The Chazen Museum of Art. Barrios currently hold the position of Engagement Manager for Exhibitions and Programs at the Center for Design and Material Culture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Barrios has exhibited her artwork internationally in Italy and Mexico and nationally in New York, New Mexico, and Texas. Her artwork is in the collections of UW-Madison and UW-Madison Department of Special Collections. Barrios has received awards for her artwork including the 2020 Women Artist Forward Fund Art Prize. Barrios uses printmaking, paper making, video, and installation to record and respond to the environmental changes happening along the California Coastline due to climate change.

Germaine Dunn-Student Category
Germaine Dunn is currently pursuing a BFA in Art and Design with an emphasis in Graphic Design and plans on graduating from the fine college of Campbellsville University. He plans to work for his employer (Isaiah House) helping to create designs for shirts, business cards, pamphlets and web design while using addiction recovery as a platform to share a lot of his ideas. Germaine Dunn has experience in 3d design, painting, printmaking such as woodcutting, lithography, screen-printing, and dry point. Germaine is from Harrodsburg Kentucky, and he enjoys printmaking, painting, singing, cooking, sculpting, and helping people in recovery. His work is inspired by his struggles, his journey in addiction recovery and his relationship with Christ. He primarily works in media of acrylic, ink and pen, wood carving and sculpting while continuing to find his personality in the arts.
One of his greatest achievements is getting his life back! To finally find a purpose and to help others find theirs. Watching the smile on his mom’s face after so many years of making her life miserable, becoming a father to his children that he had abandoned in his life of addiction and graduating from Campbellsville University will certainly be no small matter.
Germaine grew up fascinated at artists such as E.C. Segar (creator of Popeye) and Gardner Fox (creator of the Justice League) Michelangelo, Basquiat, and his cousin Quentin Owens that first kindled that spark to create.
2022 Awagami Paper Awardee:
Tia Nichols is originally from Newport News, Virginia and completed her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art at the University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville. Concentrating in Printmaking and minoring in American Sign Language & Deaf Studies, she wishes to incorporate the two visual forms to expand the arts community and its imagery.
Currently, she is studying and teaching at Wayne State University in Detroit, as a Master’s in Fine Arts Candidate in Printmaking and Graduate Teaching Assistant. Eventually, she hopes to launch a Fine Arts Center for under-resourced communities in and surrounding the Peninsula District & Tidewater Region of Virginia (Newport News, Hampton Roads, Norfolk, VA Beach, Richmond, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, etc.) or in Detroit, Michigan. Nichols has exhibited in several galleries and artist spaces in Michigan and Virginia.
She has shown with the Scarab Club in the Gilda Snowden Memorial Exhibition, Works From Home group exhibition, 50 th Annual Photography Exhibition, and Surface Tension exhibition. She has also shown at Detroit Artist Market and Art Mile Detroit. She will be showing at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American Art, East End Gallery, and Jacksonville State University galleries in the spring. She currently has work installed at the Michigan Legislature. Her work is also found at the Jacksonville State University Art Department Gallery permanent collection in Alabama. In Virginia, she has shown at the Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center in Downtown Newport News and Ruffin Gallery at University of Virginia. Currently she is serving as a Curatorial Assistant to Wayne State Galleries. Recently she has been granted the opportunity to serves as the Graduate Curatorial Assistant at the Southern Graphics Council International (SGCI) Puertografico conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico 2023 and received the Awagami Paper Award with SGCI for the Wisconsin conference of 2022.
SGCI'S Golden Anniversary
50 Years
The Our Shared Future conference at UW-Madison celebrates a remarkable milestone for the SGCI organization. Founded in 1972 by Boyd Saunders and a group of artist-educators who gathered in New Orleans, SGCI today includes over a thousand members from around the world. Our annual gathering is the largest printmaking conference in North America. Our international members regularly travel to the conference from Canada, South America, Central America, and Europe. In 2022 SGCI celebrates fifty years of connecting artists, students, educators, and professionals in the field of original prints, drawings, artist books, and handmade paper.

Chicago: Chicago, Illinois is located 150 miles southeast of Madison and has two international airports: Midway International Airport and O’Hare International Airport. Milwaukee: The Badger Coach Bus Line runs six daily trips from Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for $23 one way. The drop off location is located at the corner of Lake and Johnson streets, and is 0.7 miles away from the conference meeting site. Travel time is approximately two hours. Getting Around Madison
Madison offers several ways to get around and explore the city while you’re here. If you’re not quite up to walking down State Street or up Bascom Hill, there are other modes of transportation to get you where you need. Madison Metro Bus System travels throughout downtown Madison including routes to and from the UW Campus to the Capitol. Biking is also a very popular mode of transportation and Madison offers bicycle rental stations, several shops that rent bicycles, and extensive bike trails within the city and into surrounding areas.
Madison offers multiple taxi options. Hailing cabs in Madison is not common and you will receive faster service by calling a company directly. If you need a taxi while at the conference venue, please see the Conference Management staff and they will call a taxi for you. To reach a taxi service directly, call one of the numbers below:

Conference Venues
Memorial Union is the place to come socialize, relax, study, eat, and enjoy all the beautiful sunsets and lake views that Madison has to offer. Since opening its doors in 1928, it has offered a variety of social and educational activities for UW Students, faculty, Wisconsin Union Members, and the Madison community. Among its many treasures, the building houses a 1,200-seat theater, Strada Italian Cuisine, Carte Soups & Salads, the Daily Scoop Ice Cream, Badger Market, Peet’s Coffee, Der Rathskeller German-Style Tavern, Wheelhouse Studios, Wisconsin Hoofers, various art exhibits, and plentiful study space. Situated on the shores of Lake Mendota, the classic architecture of the building boasts a picturesque lakeside view as well as a terrace with 600 colorful sunburst chairs – the perfect spot for an afternoon snack in the summer.
Memorial Union Terrace
One of the most cherished parts of the Memorial Union is the Terrace. The Terrace functions as a great place to enjoy a beautiful day, grab a beer with friends or colleagues, sunbathe or swim off the pier, and catch one of Madison’s stunning sunsets. When the Terrace was first envisioned in the fall of 1928, it was thought to serve as a fun meeting place, a sort of “undergraduate playground.” Today, its mission and purpose of being an enjoyable gathering spot for students, parents and alumni continues to improve. After the reopening in early 2016, the Terrace expanded seating, extended grilling, increased shoreline, and lakefront views, and added additional food options. During the summer months, the Terrace hosts a “Terrace after Dark” music and film series which is free to the public.
Union South
Union South re-opened in April 2011 and replaced the former student Union located on the same space. Union South opened as a LEED Gold Certified building. Union South is the home of Varsity Hall an 11,000 square foot ballroom divisible into three separate spaces. There is also a 330-seat Marquee Theater, 17 meeting rooms, state of the art audiovisual equipment and 60 hotel rooms. Other features include several outdoor decks, four restaurants and Peet’s Coffee Shop on the ground floor, The Sett Recreation, climbing wall, bowling alley, pool tables, and games.
Going Green
Conference Management and the Wisconsin Union strive to promote green conferences and events and ask our conference guests to help us in those efforts.
We have replaced plastic usage with compostable fiber plastic made from renewable sources for all our food service needs.

- Recycling bins located at all meals and on every flood of meeting site

We are very proud of our changes and will continue to make future decisions based on alternative sources and environmental stewardship!
Wireless Internet Available
Wireless Internet access is available to all conference participants. Upon check-in, each participant will receive a login and password which will grant access to the meeting site wireless network. This network is available throughout the building, including the Union Theater and outside on the Lakefront Terrace.
UW Madison Covid Precautions
Events
Effectively immediately, UW–Madison’s COVID-related restrictions specific to gatherings and events — including meetings, conferences, and performances — are lifted. However, anyone attending an indoor in-person event must comply with the chancellor’s order on wearing masks while indoors in campus buildings or facilities, regardless of vaccination status.
In addition, all events and meetings must follow existing health and safety requirements including venue occupancy and providing food and drinks in accordance with the Campus Catering Policy.

- Along with refreshments, we will have signage thanking those who helped make it possible, with the names or logos of the largest contributors listed first, then following in order after that.
- We will also list sponsor logos on our website as contributing sponsors for the conference.
- The refreshment break will take place every day of the conference in Varsity Hall in Union South.
- Varsity Hall is the same location as the VPP Fair and Members Print Exchange.
- Union South is where check-in, panels, and inkubators will take place.
- To be a listed sponsor, we ask that contributors start with a commitment of $750
PAY ONLINE
- The conference will close on Saturday with SGCI’s 50th Anniversary Celebration & Awards. This is equal to what’s previously been called the printmakers’ ball.
- The celebration will take place in The Sett in Union South.
- This event is open to all attendees.
- All registered attendees will automatically be entered into the giveaway, they only need to be present at the time of the drawing to win their prize.

Cancellation Policy: All cancellations must be made in writing to help@sgcinternational.org by February 18, 2022, in order to receive a partial refund. A $75 cancellation process and handling fee will be assessed to any cancellation made by the deadline. Cancellations after February 18, 2022, will not receive a refund. SGCI may require up to 10 business days to process and issue a refund.
